Thanksgiving '08

Our foul Maine weather didn't 'fowl' our Thanksgiving day plans...Mount Desert Island was buffeted by a wind storm on Tuesday evening that left us without power for the better part of a day and a half. With a 62 mph wind gust recorded in Bar Harbor, we were lucky to have our power restored by late Wednesday evening to begin meal preparations.

We were joined on Wednesday afternoon by Grandma & Grandpa Reinholdt, who brought not only armfuls of food and treats but the skills of many a Thanksgiving meal to our kitchen of novices. The first version of trussing the turkey was borderline S&M, but we worked out something a little less violent in the end.

The meal was a wonderful coda to a day spent cooking together, visiting with Kim, Patrick and the guest of honor, Hunter for his first Thanksgiving meal. The video below shows him clearing the runway for the meal to come. On Friday, our annual hike was shortened a bit by a road closure and ultimately a sideways sleet. We warmed ourselves by playing RockBand, eating leftovers with the Howells and quenching our thirsts back at the Longhouse. Hunter proved his genetic line by sleeping through searing versions of 'Blackened', 'Dead or Alive', and 'Down with the Sickness', all but the 10th reprise of 'Eye of the Tiger'. He did throw metal in his crib though, that's a fact.

Saturday's hike up Bald Mountain more than made up for our short trip on Friday, the weather was near perfect. Thanks to Mom & Dad; Kim, Patrick & Hunter; for making the long journey to Maine to share the weekend with us. For all our family and friends we couldn't be with, we hope to see you soon.

Four Reinholdts joined three Ermlichs in NYC this past weekend, we enjoyed every minute. Mom & Dad treated all of us to a day at the Bronx zoo on Sunday. The tigers were a favorite as were the skycars and a colorfully narrated monorail ride through the park.

Ever been to Storyland?

It's a great place, really...an adult beverage stand would be a welcome improvement for the legions of tired parents...but that's a minor detail.

Sig's favorite ride was the whirling turtles, while Henning was decidedly less interested in the ups and downs of the park's only roller or should I say, 'Polar Coaster'. He favored Alice's Tea Cups and the Clockenspiel, I think Auntie Lee was close to a liquid yawn on the Clockenspiel, not totally sure but it looked like it.

Storyland's sprawling park kept us busy for the better part of a day and a half over an extended weekend. We shared our time with Grandma Kathy, who made for a great ride companion for our boys, and of course Harry, CJ, Auntie Lee & Uncle Ed...whose prior visits gave us fair warning for what to expect. Thankfully, pure chance left Uncle Ed in probably the wettest seat on the Geyser ride. Sig had more than his fair share of ice cream which made a repeat appearance overnight on Saturday and I have a new found interest in hula hooping thanks to the Russian Royal Hanneford Circus, air condition that tent fellas. Sig obviously lacks an appreciation for trained domestic cats walking on tightropes but that sophistication only comes with age.
I think we can safely say, "We'll be back."

I think two years officially marks a tradition...so tradition it is as the Howell’s & Reinholdts joined forces hunting Christmas trees last Saturday. The weather couldn’t have been more seasonal with a fresh coating of powder sitting on the 18” or so already on the ground. Gareth quickly spotted a tree and decided that cleaning more than one tree of mounds of snow was more work than was necessary. With that much snow who can tell a good tree from a passable one anyhow? The Howells were back in the car within a reasonable window, a half hour I would guess. Tradition dictated that the Reinholdts inspect all tree fields for a respectable tree. A new house meant our first Christmas tree had to fill it completely. After close to an hour tramping through the snow, Sig & Eric joined Laura & Henning near a 9’ Balsam begging for a ride to Mount Desert. Sig summed the family mood up best by continuously wailing in deep snow while Henning & Eric went about felling the tree. Soon all was well and we were drinking hot cocoa and other things by a warm fire.

Merry Christmas to all our family & friends, our love and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year. We hope to see you soon.

The cold front that brought a small tornado to Blue Hill and Castine earlier in the week ushered in some very Fall-like weather by late in the day Friday. It only seemed appropriate that we gather apples at one of our favorite local orchards, Merrill's Orchard just north of Ellsworth on Sunday.

Sig sampled every apple variety he could get his hands on, which was basically any apple on the ground. I think a few knobs of protein a.k.a. 'slugs' made their way through the parental filters. Henning was particularly pleased by pulling Sig in the wagon into the pits they leave behind when they remove trees from the orchard. Laura made a fine apple crisp with the 'aid' of Henning and Sig while I worked at the house removing sheetrock and obsessing over things.

Kim & Patrick will join us for the holiday weekend beginning Friday. Can't wait to see my little baby sister with a belly like mine.

Almost Fall at Bubble Pond

Tuesday, September 25th.

We are thrilled to announce that the insulation is finally completed (see the house blog for more on the woes of insulating) and the kids are now recovering from the first cold / flu of the season. The usual course after the kids recover is that Eric and I become sick. When I felt it coming on this past Saturday, I told Henning and he replied "grown-ups don't get sick".

Eric and I celebrated our 7th anniversary yesterday by actually having a conversation, which is not something we've been able to do for about 10 days. We are grateful to our fantastic friends and neighbors for lending a hand watching the kids and at the house. Just a few more obstacles (tiling, painting, assembling the kichen, moving) and we can get back to life as usual. What have the kids been up to while Mom and Dad (OK..mostly Dad) are working on the house? Sig has graduated to the "toddler room" this fall and is loving it. Henning has moved into another "testing Mom and Dad" phase. Both just barely survived their latest home haircuts.

Labor Day Weekend is the weekend Blue Hill hosts the Blue Hill Country Fair. Sig was fond of the gigantic onion rings and tried climbing into almost any animal cage on the fairgrounds. He's clearly his mother's child when it comes to sharing an appreciation for anything living with four legs and his father's child when it comes to appreciating those four legs served up on the dinner table. The only ride we could cajole Henning into riding was the gigantic slide, sitting on Dad's lap. Sig on the other hand wanted to ride everything and anything but met none of the height restrictions. He and Laura rode the carousel together and after the initial shock of it all he had a hard time understanding why it stopped so soon and everyone got off.

We've been pretty absorbed in our house project of late...Sig reminded us over the weekend the reason for doing all of this in the first place. He will moan and whine as if you just stole his favorite blanket if he even sees a package of Oreos in the kitchen. So after a dozen or so of Oreos Sig posed for the above sporting a chocolate goatee. Figuring out that they float in a glass of milk was almost as good as the cookies.
Henning & Ieuan had a sleep-over on Saturday night and the boys & I broke out early Sunday morning to visit Sand Beach, which we shared with only a few people.

Vacationland

We finally purchased National Park passes during Tom's visit and they're being put to good use. After Tom departed Sunday, our good friend Julie and her boyfriend Mike came to spend the night on the following Thursday finishing their vacation in Bar Harbor at 'Park Place'. Having spent the previous night at the Harborside just down the street, it was quite a few rungs down the hospitality ladder. We hoped that after a couple of gin & tonics an Aerobed was passable as a place to rest for the night.

Julie & Mike left mid-day on Friday and we welcomed Uncle John & Aunt Val for an overnight stay on Friday. Poor Val suffered not only the long drive to Maine but also the fact that her hosts forgot her birthday. Sorry Va!!! We know burgers and frozen fries don't make for memorable birthday dinners, next time lobster, we promise. Their counsel on our house project has been invaluable and I think John was glad this visit didn't involve chainsaws or heavy lifting. The only progress we could mark on the building project during their visit were the sill plates on a bare foundation. John did manage to find another rather large and rather dead tree for me to cut though (which I did Sunday afternoon). After visiting our house project, we made our way to Seawall in Manset and stopped at the top of Cadillac Mountain for a hazy view of the Maine coast. Following that we headed over to the loop road near Otter Point for a picnic lunch. Sig pulled a Jackson Pollock with his GoGurt (yogurt in a tube) at lunch and covered John, Val & Laura with active culture. We never seem to bring enough baby-wipes to cover the messes our kids make. Sig enjoyed trying to communicate with the seagulls in what Val termed a 'really creepy evil laugh'. We continued on the loop road by Jordan Pond, Bubble Rock, Bubble Pond and finally back to our place where it was nap-time for the kids.

Good seeing all of you, next time bring your paintbrushes and hammers...we're going to need some serious help if we want to be in our new home by November.

Hailing from Littleton, Colorado and currently on sabbatical, Tom Olezeski visited our family for a few short days. We showed him a little of the 'way life should be'...although Colorado is pretty stiff competition. Our mountains are about 13,000' shorter but Tom was none the wiser in all the fog we had. Saturday we hiked Parkman, Gilmore, Sargeant, back to Gilmore, back to Parkman and over to Bald. Tom's Colorado lungs made him hard to keep pace with...good seeing you Tom.

Odd indeed, I think they're online publishing budget is slightly more constrained than their print budget, so buying photo rights wasn't a part of the package. If only I were designing more modern houses these days...

Mid-Summer in Maine

We've settled into our new digs in Bar Harbor and anxiously await any incremental progress on our house in Mount Desert. It's hard watching our house slowly take shape, but with framing about to commence we should see quick progress in a matter of weeks. Living in such close quarters has its disadvantages but overall it's worked out well for us, it's very close to town, the national park, the lab and daycare which means more time doing what we'd like rather than in the car.

Laura headed to San Antonio for 5 days at the end of July for the Society for the Study of Reproduction annual conference, where she presented her current work to a distinguished group of her colleagues. In her absence I was joined by Grandma & Grandpa Reinholdt & Grandma Kathy whose invaluable assistance made Laura's time away from home manageable (and most enjoyable for our boys).

Trips to Sand Beach in Acadia, hikes up Cadillac Mountain's West Face trail, mini-golf, trips out to eat in Bar Harbor, walks in the park, all made for an enjoyable visit from the grandparents and gave the kids (and Dad) a break from the usual routine of daycare. Thanks for all of your help with the children and everyday household duties, it was immensely helpful.

Some of the best news of the summer arrived just prior to Laura leaving for Texas. She was offered a position as Technology Development Scientist in the Genetic Resources division of the Jackson Laboratory. This marks a transition away from the ever-fluctuating world of soft-money to a permanent position within the lab. She will be a part of a group of scientists determining the direction for the lab's future research and technology development. That's my girl...I'm beaming with pride.

Sig is walking confidently now and mutters the occasional word here and there, mostly 'dog' and 'hat'. He's eating meat at an unsustainable rate so if you visit, please bring something containing protein. He graduates into the toddler room at the end of August, which will expand his daycare world tenfold, more toys, more kids, more outside time. Henning is getting taller and enjoys telling stories and telling adults what to do. His favorite subjects right now are bears, sharks, and any animal with big teeth. Although when you put a live lobster in front of him he runs into the closet. Sig on the other hand will pick up the lobster, try to pet it and then consider it food. Our kids are our life right now, they're wonderfully entertaining and equally exhausting.

A few images from the annual Bar Harbor Fourth of July parade. After spending the better part of the day before (and previous night) vomiting Sig joined the rest of the Reinholdts and Sophie for the parade in downtown Bar Harbor. Henning's favorites: "the things that go by and throw candy", which basically describes almost every float in the parade. Sig was less fond of the Shriners driving gas powered go-karts, but managed to keep everything we fed him at the parade in his stomach and cooed at each passing animal, with a definite preference for dogs. It made his mother beam and his father cringe. (Dogs aren't allowed in new homes.)

The Center for Peace and Justice's brigade added 11 panels to the Iraq war body count representing an additional 2,000+ killed in action since last year's parade, a sad commentary indeed.

After picking up every last piece of candy thrown from the floats, Sig went home to sleep it off and Henning refueled for an evening at the fireworks, joined by Laura & Sophie. After waiting for quite a long time on the village green, the fireworks began and Henning immediately asked if they could go home. Laura responded with, "In a few minutes..." He enjoyed the 'flowers in the sky', and it was an interesting end to a long July 4th for all of us. I managed to spy a few through the trees from our new digs near the top of West St. but was happy to hold down the fort listening for Sig.

Sig takes his first few steps. Thanks to Henning's encouragement and a balloon or two, Sig has been testing out his legs leaving crawling to the babies.

He's more interested in seeing himself on video than he is in walking so once we break out the video camera he stops walking, crawls to the camera and tries to watch himself, which is how both videos end.

Henning Turns Three

Thanks to Dad's late night hard work, Henning had dinosaur cupcakes to share with his Kids' Corner friends on his birthday. Lessons we have learned after our first real school party... 1) be sure that there is a pink dinosaur for every girl and a T-Rex for every boy!

That night Henning shared a birthday cupcake with Sig and then "opened" his big present - his first bike.

A week later, we threw Henning's official birthday party the day after we moved. Note the unpacked boxes in the background! Grandma Kathy, Grandma Gigi, Grandpa, the Howells and the Bakers came to celebrate with us. The Lightning McQueen cake was a big hit with Henning and his buddies Finn and Ieuan.

On the heels of Henning's third birthday (more on that later) came Sig's first birthday. We decided to celebrate the occasion by moving. Thanks to the help and hard work of Grandma Gigi, Grandma Kathy, Grandpa and our friend Sophie, we managed to get ourselves moved and to throw a small party for Sig. Since monkeys are an inexplicable personal favorite of his, we put together a monkey cake and dug up some Curious George decorations. Between having a cake nearly to himself and being surrounded by balloons (another favorite), we are sure this was a banner day for Sig and we all managed to forget unpacking for an hour or so.

A Viking at work...

Sig is nearly one. True to his Viking heritage, he is a meat eater. Anything green and vegetable-like ends out on the floor. And lately, even orange vegetable are getting the toss. But meat is a sure hit with this kid. Since Sig has, so far, been underrepresented in our Blog, we thought we would provide a short tribute to our little guy. He is not so little anymore - 25 lbs and he has already figured out how to make his big brother cry. He is crawling, standing and attempting the stairs, but he's not walking yet. He is a bit of a trouble maker and thinks "no" is pretty funny. He has made us realize why people talk about "child proofing" their house. Yesterday we found him in the kitchen - where he had managed to open a plastic, M&M filled Easter egg. There was only one M&M left. We're not sure how he managed to chew the M&M's, since he only has about 4 teeth. He made it very clear that he was not happy when Dad took the egg away. "Henning never did this" is a daily refrain in our house these days. On May 5th, Sig will be 1. Our good friend and fellow bloggah, Jason (of"the triforce.") recently sent directions on "baking" a meat cake (ground beef "cake" with mashed potato frosting). We're thinking this may be the way to go. Maybe in the shape of a "1"? Stay tuned...

Easter 2007

After a week full of daycare woes, trips to the doctor, sick children, and close to 2’ of snow on Thursday, we were glad to dose Henning with 1000mg of caffeinated bunny rabbit on Sunday morning and watch him scatter plastic grass into every corner of our house. Sig sat by and drooled while shaking his new maraca, next year the chocolate bunny is all yours little fella. Saturday we were treated to an early Easter dinner at the Howells. No ‘Radio Ga-Ga’ this year…it was replaced with talk of houses, ugly light fixtures, shared backyards and a bubble bath (…for the kids).

The preceding weeks found us heavily involved planning our new digs. After touring every affordable acre on MDI, we placed an offer on four acres of (wet)land in Mount Desert and after some minor negotiation it was accepted a week ago Sunday. A special thanks to Uncle John for coaching us along the way. This paves the way for a May 14th closing date at which point we’ll commence with the clearing of the land and hopefully allow for the foundation to be poured in early June. We’ve cleared our plans with the code enforcement officer (no small feat in the Town of Mt. Desert), the State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and will be finishing the septic system design in the next week. We’ll move to temporary quarters on May 5th for 6 months while the house is under construction with the option to extend our lease month by month should delays (in construction?) prevent us from keeping meeting the November 1 move-in goal.

Henning turns 3 at the end of April and shortly thereafter Sig meets up with his first birthday. We’re thankful for the love and support of our families through what has been an interesting few months. We look forward to hosting everyone over the summer, sharing our building plans and eventually our new home in the fall.

An Anniversary...

It's been an entire year since we received the official diagnosis for Dad. Mom & Dad visited us in Maine over the 2006 President's Day holiday weekend and upon arrival that evening shared with us their dreadful news. We knew so little about what lay ahead for him and for our family. We're grateful for the pioneering work of Dr. Druker at OHSU and his development of Gleevec, the first tyrosine kinase inhibitor to be approved by the FDA for the treatment of CML. Druker and others have built on this work since Gleevec's approval in 2000 and have been integral in the development of the second generation inhibitors Sprycel and Nilotinib. Sprycel is already FDA approved and Nilotinib is nearing the end of phase III trials. In the 1960's, CML was the first cancer discovered to be linked to a particular genetic event. Since that discovery 30 years ago, it's been on the forefront of drug investigation and discovery. We're lucky that Dad has so many wonderful options available for treatment. Dad has always dealt with this remarkably, his eternal optimism and faith haven't wavered through all that he's endured. Mom has quietly supported him through doctor's visits, the tests that keep coming and coming, my countless lines of questioning, and the waiting through it all. I'm grateful our family is bound so closely together and hope that the coming year and the next battery of tests will reveal an ever-deepening remission for Dad. Others in our family and extended family continue battles of their own and we send our thoughts and prayers to you. In particular Paul & Hiroko, we wish your parents hope and peace in each new day.

Our visit with Mom & Dad was quite nice and gave us a chance to charge our batteries a bit while the boys were in Grandma & Grandpa's hands. Temple Norbis saw several iterations and Mom and Henning built a gravity defying house and pool for McQueen. Sig crawled for the first time over the weekend and tries to climb anything in sight. Our hikes in the snow, sledding at the golf course, and a lunch out at Geddy's marked a relaxing weekend together.

Next step, March 9th, FISH negative, PCR undetectable...right Dad?

One can always hope.

February in Maine

Can you tell we've been feeling a bit house-bound? About 12F outside, stiff 20mph wind and we (presumably of able mind) think it's a good idea to tramp about on a frozen lake. We're lucky the batteries in the camera held out for the few photos we managed to take to actually prove we were that misguided. Once we pulled Sig out of the sled and wrapped him up like a wookie he just growled. Mom just had this look of disbelief on her face, I think it was frozen there. We happily recovered with some hot chocolate at home. We were pleased to share the weekend with Mom-G, she endured more of our cooking including traditional Maine shrimp...we're well aware why it sells for less than a dollar a pound. Henning capitalized Grandma's time with requests for stories and a cuddle or two. Next visit will be warmer, we promise.

When left to their own devices, kids do a fine job of taking care of themselves...until they discover that the plastic bucket containing the legos is actually more interesting than the legos themselves. Grandmothers, be warned, this video could make you want to drive the 500+/- miles to Maine and pilot the ship for a while. Grandfather's, we think you'll appreciate the humor in all of this so watch it alone and chuckle out loud.

Perhaps if posting home movies were as easy 30 years ago, we would've seen proof that plastic buckets, although fun, don't make great helmets.
On a postive note...Sig is doing well, as the photo of him in his new hoodie can attest. Henning quickly recovered from the event after a fruit bar and some chocolate.

The master of hand waving, we've been unable to communicate with this boy. His complex hand motions confuse us, we expect it's a sign of intelligence and we're the first to acknowledge that we're far behind him in the intelligence department.

In this video he's just watched his parents pull off a plastic lego storage bucket from his brother's head (without the aid of salted butter solids). He's glad his head fits neatly inside that bucket, as tested by Henning on multiple occasions, and that his brother can once again steal his toys unhindered by a plastic helmet.

Sig is the quiet one, for now, steadily gaining weight (22# now) and outpacing his parents efforts to keep him in clothing that they're able to fully snap closed. He's riding facing forward now in the car and before long will be crawling forward into the corners of the room, instead of scooching backward.

Annual Thanksgiving Hike

Per our annual tradition, three Reinholdt males climbed Parkman Mountain as penance for a full day of eating and drinking on Thanksgiving. It was Henning's first time summitting Parkman and while he didn't climb the entire 941', his little legs navigated the final (icy) 50' by himself. We compensated for our fluid loss with a couple of Real Ales back at the pond house.

We welcomed the New Year with The Howell family. Henning had his first "sleep-over" with his friend Ieuan. We listened in on some very cute private conversations between the two of them. We know that we speak for several other of our mutual friends when we say Thank You to the Howells for coming back to America for awhile! That's Eric peeking out of an inflatable igloo. 2006 out...2007 in
Travels included family stops to Connecticut, Massachusetts and a fond farewell to Grandpa Garvey in Sandown, New Hampshire. 2006 gave us two new family members our growling baby Sig and Patrick who we proudly welcome as an honorary Reinholdt using the surname alias Ermlich. It presented us with three letters we wished we never knew, CML and Dad began the toughest fight he'll ever know. We're thankful for the strength of our family and close friends and hope that 2007 is ever brighter.
